UPDATED: EVA-RELATED SKATING NEWS: Congratulations to Kimmie Meissner, the new World Champion in women's figure skating! The 16-year-old from Maryland won her title on Saturday night in Montreal, Canada. Meissner skated to Eva's "Over the Rainbow" at the exhibition gala which followed the competition! According to Sylvia at "Michelle Kwan Forum," the ESPN announcers did not identify the singer, which is typical of television coverage of skating events, where the focus is naturally on the skaters. To see photos of Kimmie Meissner in her "Over the Rainbow" program, scroll down this page. **UPDATE: It looks as if Kimmie Meissner will be skating to "Over the Rainbow" for some performances on the "Champions on Ice" tour this spring and summer. According to this Knight-Ridder article by Bob Ford, 'Meissner will be in the Wachovia Center April 16 to take part in the annual Champions on Ice exhibition tour. Her schedule at Fallston (Md.) High School, where she will take her first round of SAT tests this semester, allows for a weekend outing here and there. After winning the world championship, she was invited to join the tour for selected shows not far from home and her University of Delaware training center. Philadelphia will be the first stop... she will perform to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for tradition and then something modern for herself, maybe "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield.' NEW DETAILS ABOUT KIMMIE MEISSNER'S "OVER THE RAINBOW": Sylvia at the Kimmie Meissner Forum responded to my request for a "move by move" description of Kimmie's OTR program. I was able to get similar descriptions for the other skaters who performed to Eva's music, and found it very helpful to understand what I was watching! Sylvia writes, Blue dress with silver flowers/vine motif across the top. RFO [right forward outside edge] spiral to other held out moves at the beginning of the program; double Axel jump; planned triple flip jump [popped to a single at Worlds]; spin combination: forward camel spin to a forward outside edge change with arms clasped behind her back / forward sit spin / layback / change foot to back sit with an edge change / rise to catch foot Y; triple Lutz jump from the traditional long backwards glide entry; spiral sequence: RFI [right forward inside edge] change to RFO [right forward outside] edge on same foot to a LBI [left back inside edge] catch foot spiral; stars to butterfly to back sit spin [lowering her head to touch her spinning leg] with an edge change; small split jump into various turns into a triple Salchow jump; layback spin [classic position to sideways lean with a dropped free leg]; back pivot to end pose. Thank you, Sylvia! Many thanks also to members of the Michelle Kwan Forum for the photos: Beth and Fred, who provided the photo on the right, and to MichelynB, who provided the photo on the left. EVA'S RECORDING IDENTIFIED ON ABC TV: Sylvia at the "Kimmie Meissner Forum" writes, "ABC showed the graphic 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Eva Cassidy' during Kimmie's televised encore exhibition. She made a few minor changes to this version of her program -- adding a 2axel-2toe-2loop combination jump near the end (where the triple Salchow was originally) -- and she landed her triple flip near the beginning but popped her triple Salchow (moved to earlier in the program) this time." Thank you to Heather of the "Michelle Kwan Forum" for this screen capture! Eva's name was also included in this Orlando Sentinel newspaper report of the skating show. It's wonderful to know that people will be able to identify the singer.
WATCHING KIMMIE SKATE TO EVA'S MUSIC: Steve in Alabama writes, 'People who want to see the Kimmie Meissner skating routine to "Over The Rainbow" just need to go to the Kimmie Meissner Fan Center web site, and click on the link "2006 US Nationals Exhibition". It will take you to http://www.angelfire.com/crazy/kmeissner/. It's GREAT! You must have Windows Media Player.' For more information about Kimmie Meissner, scroll down this page a bit.
